While working on The Hopefuls: Chasing a Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream in the Minnesota Music Scene – a story so sprawling and multi-faceted that each of its four principals could easily have a whole book to themselves – I knew I was going to miss some things.  Case in point, in June 2020, I received an e-mail from Jay Krasnow, who revealed that he had served as Spymob’s very first manager, before they were even Spymob. Jay is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who spent 10 years in the Twin Cities scene producing, playing, and co-engineering for a wide variety of artists. Storyhill

Bio Storyhill is a folk harmony duo consisting of Bozeman, Montana natives Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson, who have performed together off and on since 1989. Starting in high school performing as Chris and Johnny, the friends ended up at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and started to record albums and perform on and off campus, becoming a local sensation. After graduation they toured the country, built up a sizable fanbase, and changed their name to Storyhill before burning out and calling it quits in 1997. After exploring solo exploits, the duo reunited in 2000. They started a yearly festival, Storyhillfest, and in 2007 signed to Red House Records, releasing two acclaimed albums on the venerable label. In summer 2019 the duo celebrated the 30th anniversary of their first recording. The Legend of Sweet ol' Heath

Heath Henjum, bass player for The Hopefuls and a dozen other acts, died unexpectedly in late February 2025. He was 55 years old. One of my regrets regarding my book The Hopefuls: Chasing a Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream in the Minnesota Music Scene is that - because the Hopefuls collective is so filled with fascinating figures - I wasn’t able to give all of them the spotlight they deserve. Heath is definitely at the top of that list; I estimate I only used about a tenth of what he shared with me when I interviewed him in 2015. So please forgive me for using the sad occasion of his passing to remedy that. Not that Heath especially cared about the spotlight. All good bands, like all good sports teams, need a “glue guy,” someone who finds their joy not in adulation but in making everyone else around them better.
